Obituary of Marie Joyce Campbell
Joyce “Marie” Campbell
November 23, 1929 – October 14, 2024
Mrs. Marie Campbell passed away October 14, 2024, at the age of 94.
Marie was born on the Mappin Homestead (one mile south of Byemoor) on November 23, 1929, to parents Harry & Grace Mappin. She spent her life on the farm and even helped at home for 8 years after completing her schooling at Byemoor. She was a 4-H garden club leader for 5 years and assistant leader to the 4-H sewing club for several years.
Marie met Douglas Campbell at a Stampede in the area and dated sporadically (after all it was harvest time). After an appropriate courtship, Marie received a huge engagement ring (a rusty old harness ring). They married November 17, 1955, and moved to their farm where they worked hard together making a beautiful yard and garden and ultimately a beautiful life farming together. Cake making and decorating took up a lot of Marie’s spare time as well as keeping her yard and beautiful garden.
“Auntie” Marie was always making pies and buns and cakes and would always show up with those goodies whether someone was in need or not. She spent a good amount of time compiling and leading the charge to complete the Byemoor History Book.
She gave of herself to her family and community. She said she was an expert on kids because she had none and many with a twinkle in her eye and a wink. All her nieces and nephews adored her, aspired to be as tall as her and appreciated her sense of humor.
Many of us will fondly recall dancing with Auntie Marie, going on field picnics and enjoying the homemade goodies of the day! It was always great sport to toboggan down the hill or play anti-I-over at the bottom of the hill. Auntie Marie sewed lots as well, I’m sure some of us can recall a special outfit or jacket as well.
Marie and Doug moved to Stettler in May of 2001 and enjoyed their retired days there with new friends and neighbours. They still recalled all their very special fortune of the neighbours they left behind in their farming days, near Byemoor.
Marie is survived by brother Albert (Jean) Mappin; sisters Marguerite (Ronnie) Brown and Carol Yates; many dear nieces, nephews other relatives and many dear friends who will miss her.
Marie is predeceased by husband Doug who passed away February 12, 2008 and parents Harry and Grace Mappin.
